Mindfulness Exercise:
How You Can Be Free of Thoughts in Meditation
"The mind projects stories on top of this moment.
This moment itself in its essence is free of all stories. It has no stories except what your mind projects on to it.
It is through the stories of the mind that you become this person in this environment with these desires, worries etc. All of this is created by the thoughts. This moment itself is free of all of it. It is perfect peace.
In meditation, we want to surrender the stories as they arise. Not push them away or control them in any way, but just to let them go when we are able. Let the thoughts arise but then let them go. The key is to not grab hold of the thoughts or if that is difficult, try when you do grab hold of them, let them go.
As we surrender the thoughts in this way, our attention falls past the stories into that which is story-less, that which is wordless, formless and always awake. We move into what is real in this moment, beyond what thinking says is real into a direct experience of this moment.
We can call this awareness or consciousness. Beyond interpreting this moment with thinking, there is just consciousness; awakeness. And the nature of this awakeness is unconditional peace, bliss and love.
Here is the mindfulness exercise:
We all know someone that loves to talk.
They need to say certain things, get a certain amount of things ‘off their chest’ as we say.
If you engage with them, they keep talking; they’ll talk forever.
But if you let them talk while resting in the silence, without reacting, eventually, all of the words disappear back into silence, back into peace, back into formlessness without any conflict or stress. Eventually they will run out of things to say.
In the same way, if you let the thoughts flow without involvement, they will run out of momentum. It is your involvement with them that empowers them to keep going. When you just let them flow while resting in the moment, everything will dissolve back into consciousness so that only consciousness remains: only formless being remains.
Then we rest deeper and deeper into formlessness allowing formless consciousness to take over.
Much love,
Kip”
